Macroplast® Technology for Wind Turbines

An innovative approach for Wind Blade Assembly

Henkel has the first GL™ certified two-component, structural polyurethane adhesive for blade bonding and MMA adhesives that are specially formulated for blade bonding. These adhesives cure at room temperature and provide crack-resistant, longlasting bonds to both composites and metals. Typical uses: blade bonding, component bonding, blade repair.

Blade Bonding with Macroplast® UK 1340

Macroplast® UK 1340, the first Germanischer Lloyd-certified polyurethane adhesive product Henkel Corporation has introduced to simplify and optimize blade manufacturing process for the wind power market.

Henkel's Macroplast® UK 1340 series are solvent-free, two-component structural polyurethane adhesives that fully cure in just eight hours, greatly accelerating the blade assembly process and increasing productivity. The adhesives are applied at room temperature and undergo a much lower exothermic peak (less than 100ºC) during the cure process, minimizing the possibility of substrate damage or stress cracking.

These GL-certified polyurethanes improve the overall efficiency and reduce the costs of rotor blade production processes. These non-abrasive adhesives offer excellent wetting characteristics and require substantially less surface preparation (e.g., sanding or laminating) than epoxies. They will reliably bridge wide gaps - up to 40 mm - between substrates.

Blade Repair with Macroplast® UK 1341

Blades may get damaged in manufacturing, transportation, installation and on-site operation. Henkel blade repair solution Macroplast® UK 1341 is also a polyurethane adhesive allowing faster curing at room temperature, which not only saves process time but also eliminate local heating requirements to cure adhesive, especially ideal for field repair work. It is available in dual-cartridge and is easy for dispensing and handling for a field work.

Henkel Polyurethane adhesive has eliminated the following disadvantages of using conventional epoxy adhesives:

         • Require up to 24 hours curing at elevated temperature
• Energy consumption
• Generate potentially damaging levels of heat during the curing process
• Internal stress resulting from thermal expansion difference
• Require surface preparation
• Some moisture sensitivity
